This month, we're all about celebrating this gem's sophisticated allure and timeless charm. The thing I have always found about birthstones is that we dont always associate with our own, that is why I feel, while it's important to know the properties of each gemstone I feel it's just as important to learn fascinating or fun facts because this sometimes gives us insight into why we identify with or love one gemstone over another. And why this love or allure evolves and changes at different periods of our lives. 

Did you know that sapphires are more than just a visual treat? They're also guardians of your emotional wellbeing. Here is why we love sapphires and what makes them one of the most cherished gemstones in the world:


1. Diverse Colors: Sapphires are part of the family name corundum and while traditionally known for their iconic blue hue, sapphires actually come in almost every color of the rainbow, including pink, yellow, orange, peach, and green. The only color they can't be is red, as red corundum is classified as ruby.

2. Healing Hearts: Sapphires are said to promote emotional balance and clarity, calming nerves and fostering loyalty.

3. Symbol of Royalty: Sapphires have long been associated with royalty and romance. They are believed to symbolize wisdom, virtue, good fortune, and holiness for royals.

4. Hardness and Durability: Sapphires are one of the hardest minerals, scoring 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness, right after diamonds (which score a 10). This makes them an excellent choice for jewellery that withstands everyday wear and to celebrate eternal love. 

5. A Spiritual Touch: Known to attract divine favor, sapphires were often worn by leaders as a symbol of powerful blessings

6. Star Sapphires: Some sapphires exhibit a phenomenon known as asterism, creating what is known as a star sapphire. These sapphires display a star-like pattern on the surface of the stone when viewed under direct light due to the presence of needle-like inclusions. This is one of the most fascinating naturally occuring features this gemstone can have.

7. Famous Sapphires: The Star of India, at 563 carats, is one of the largest and most famous star sapphires in the world. It is over two billion years old and is on display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.

8. Historical Significance: Ancient Greeks wore sapphires for guidance when seeking answers from the oracle. Buddhists believed they brought spiritual enlightenment, and Hindus used them during worship.

9. Emotional & Wellbeing: Sapphires are said to protect against negative energies, promote mental clarity, and foster loyalty, integrity, and devotion.
